Anglo American is one of the world's largest diversified mining companies, with a significant corporate office presence across South Africa. Their Johannesburg South offices house operational and support teams requiring reliable, uninterrupted power. Rising electricity costs and growing exposure to load-shedding created both a cost and a business continuity risk that required a decisive energy solution.
Challenge
The office environment demanded seamless power continuity — any interruption to IT infrastructure, lighting, and HVAC during load-shedding directly impacted productivity. The installation had to be completed without disrupting active office operations, and the rooftop area needed to be maximised efficiently within the available footprint to deliver meaningful solar yield alongside battery backup.
Solution
SOCO ENERGY designed and installed a 100kWp solar PV system paired with an 85kWh BESS, configured as a fully integrated PV/BESS hybrid. The battery provides seamless backup during load-shedding while the solar array offsets daytime consumption, reducing grid dependency across peak office hours. The system was delivered as a cash purchase and commissioned in 4 weeks with zero disruption to office operations.
Outcome
The Anglo American offices now operate through load-shedding without interruption, with the BESS providing full backup for critical loads. Daytime solar generation directly offsets grid consumption during peak office hours, delivering measurable reductions in electricity costs. The system gives Anglo American full energy asset ownership and long-term protection against continued Eskom tariff increases.
