Selby, Johannesburg, Gauteng
Following the successful deployment of SOCO ENERGY's 1.7MWh inline UPS and BESS solution at the Dr. Oetker Selby facility, the client elected to expand their energy strategy with a dedicated solar PV system. The facility's continuous daytime production load made it an ideal candidate for rooftop solar, and the existing relationship with SOCO ENERGY provided confidence in execution. Adding generation capacity was the logical next step in reducing grid dependency across the full operation.
The Selby facility operates large-scale food production equipment continuously through the day, resulting in a substantial and consistent electricity draw. Despite the existing BESS providing resilience during outages, grid consumption costs remained high. The challenge was to size and install a solar array that maximised rooftop yield, integrated cleanly with the existing energy infrastructure, and was delivered without interrupting active production.
SOCO ENERGY designed and installed a 400kWp grid-tied solar PV system across the available rooftop area of the Selby facility, optimised to match the plant's peak daytime production load profile. The system integrates directly with the existing BESS and grid infrastructure, with solar generation prioritised to offset consumption before drawing from the grid. Delivered as a cash purchase, the system was commissioned within 4 weeks with zero disruption to operations.
The 400kWp solar system meaningfully reduces grid electricity consumption during production hours, building on the savings already delivered by the BESS installation. Combined, the two systems give Dr. Oetker a comprehensive energy position — battery resilience through outages and solar generation reducing daily grid costs. Full asset ownership means the facility captures 100% of the energy benefit with no ongoing lease or usage payments.
